ABOUT THE BLOG

The Story

I have always wanted to write a book about Jayden and our family, I even started it, but I never have the time to focus on it. I thought this blog would be an easier platform to get my thoughts out there, so I figured, what the hell, I will give it a try! The main reason I am so open about things is that I feel more people need to be aware of the other side of the spectrum. I hate “Autism Awareness Month” where everyone turns a blue light on and buys cute multicolored puzzle pieces because I do not think that there is any actual awareness for kiddos like Jayden. Since posting on JFM and making this blog, so many have said to me, “I had no idea there were kids out there like Jayden with severe behaviors like he has.” That is exactly why I wanted to do this. I want everyone to be aware of the severe end of things. The head banging, the two-hour meltdowns where he repeatedly tries to slam his head to the floor, and the biting, scratching, and hair pulling. Why do I want this out there? Because there is this entire group of children (and adults), wonderful and amazing children, that not many people know about. Children who may not memorize numbers, states, or the world map like some children with Autism do, but children who are absolutely amazing in their own way when their behavior is finally calm for the moment. But I also want people to understand that when they see a picture of Jayden smiling for example, that before and after that picture, he may have bitten me and slammed his head to the floor multiple times. How can we move forward to help these kiddos while they grow and transform into adults if no one even knows they exist? That is why I am an open book. Maybe my words will inspire someone to spend a little more time on figuring out more about Autism and someday help these kids more than they can be helped right now. Let’s be honest, some children on the severe end of the spectrum do not have many options in the way of help and resources, and that must change!
